Mrs. Jan Taylor - Taylor Bros -
Jan Taylor was born and educated in Hobart and, on completion of secondary education, was employed in both public and private sectors as a stenographer.
In 1968 Jan joined her father-in-law and husband in the family business, opening a small office at the Battery Point Slipyard performing clerical, payroll duties, and annual accounts. The father and son partnership was incorporated in 1972 at which time Jan became a Director.
In 1995, following Geoff's accidental death, in partnership with sons and fellow Directors Greg and Phillip work commenced on construction of new workshop and office premises on riverfront land at Derwent Park . The premises were opened in April 1996, and an additional larger building was constructed in 1998. In July 2002 Taylor Bros further extended their area of operation with the opening of an engineering facility in Devonport.
Jan's responsibilities include administration of the Taylor Bros group of companies and during her period of service has acquired a comprehensive knowledge of the business and its specialised areas of activity. The Company has a staff of 45, including highly skilled tradesmen with diversified qualifications.
Taylor Bros have moved forward from servicing the local fishing fleet to coastal and international shipping, and specialise in major engine room refits and total re-engineering packages. Their expertise and experience have provided exciting opportunities in oil exploration, shipping, forestry, crop processing, and the Antarctic.
Jan has travelled extensively in Australia and through New Zealand , Japan , South America , USA , Europe and the United Kingdom .
Jan has served on the Board of Brand Tasmania Council and is a Board member of Family Business Australia and inaugural Chairman of the Tasmanian Chapter. She is also a member of Family Business Network ( Lausanne , Switzerland ), Femmes Chefs de Enterprises Mondiales (Paris), and an executive member of Women Chiefs of Enterprise International ( Tasmania ).
Jan is a member of the Royal Hobart Golf Club and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania, and enjoys cruising and fishing on her 45 ft motor launch “Crusade”. She also enjoys the theatre and music. Sons Greg and Phillip are married and Jan has three granddaughters and one grandson.
