2010 State Conference and Family Business of the Year Awards
Morning Session: A practical demonstration of developing a Family Constitution and the benefits of having one
Recognising the importance of the Family Constitution in a professionally-run family business, the Advisers will run a practical demonstration of how to create one. Given Members’ interest in the concept, this session is bound to be popular. We recommend that as many of your family members participate as possible.
Lunch: 2010 Family Business of the Year Awards - (Lunch is included in Conference Registration)
Afternoon session:
Building an effective family business workforce
How do you develop an appropriate workplace culture and management practices that will ensure your family business becomes an ‘employer of choice’ for both family and non-family alike?
Research shows that ‘management culture’ is the area of greatest organisational weakness - with the strongest influence on overall job satisfaction and retention. Therefore, creating a positive, respected management culture is vital to the future success of any business. Family Business directors and managers should be alert to these findings and create a culture that is appealing to both family and non-family employees. The 2010 FBA-SA State Conference will help you meet this challenge.
Following the keynote address of Dr Greg McCann of Stetson University, Florida via video, an interactive panel session facilitated by Dr Jill Thomas of the University of Adelaide Business School will explore a range of issues, including what Next Genners cite as the pros and cons of working in their family business and issues associated with the integration of family and non-family employees. The panel will consider the key elements required to build an effective workforce where the diverse attributes of all individuals – family and non-family – can be harnessed for mutual benefit. While recognising that there are perceived differences in style and approach of different generations, the panel and audience will also discuss the pitfalls of stereotyping individuals into generational categories.

Non-Family Managers for your Family Business
As it grows and develops a family business will need to recruit non-family managers at some stage of its business life cycle to complement the family talent.
It can also be a succession planning solution. Maybe the next generation are not ready to take over yet—or may never wish to do so—but the family wants to keep the business going long-term as a family-owned entity.
Whether you want to replace yourself with a new CEO—or need to fill a key senior position while you’re still at the helm—this seminar will explore how to find the right people to fit YOUR business and discuss the challenges and opportunities in selecting and retaining non-family managers.

"So you think you want to take over the family business..." SOLD OUT
Generational change can breathe new life into a business… or it can be its downfall. It all depends on what’s done and how it’s done. Continuous planning and development towards this goal is the key – along with open and active communication and a good dose of patience, understanding and persistence all-round. Lowen Partridge will facilitate a lively panel of potential Next Generation successors and current leaders of successful family businesses. For a variation on the theme, we’ve added a Next Generation in-law who has already taken over leadership of the family business. You'll gain fascinating insights into how successful families in business manage the transition in the context of the three overlapping systems of the family business dynamic – Family/Business/Ownership – and how different generational characteristics impact on the processes. | 6:00pm - 8:00pm
